Most common cause of human yersiniosis. Highly heterogeneous; subdivided into biotypes and serotypes, with a dedicated cgMLST scheme for surveillance.

Yersinia enterocolitica is the most frequent cause of human yersiniosis in Europe, acquired chiefly from pork, and produces enterocolitis, mesenteric adenitis and a range of post-infectious manifestations.

The species is markedly heterogeneous — far more so than Y. pestis — and is subdivided into biotypes (1A, 1B, 2 to 5) and serotypes whose pathogenic potential differs substantially: biotype 1A is generally regarded as non-pathogenic, biotype 1B as highly pathogenic. This internal diversity is why the species has its own dedicated cgMLST scheme of 1727 loci at BIGSdb-Pasteur, used for national surveillance in France, rather than being typed with the genus-wide scheme.

Defining markers

cgMLST is the reference typing method for the genus (BIGSdb-Pasteur). SNP branch nomenclature applies to Y. pestis alone, which is a monomorphic clone.
